Russell James was born in 1962 in Australia into a working-class family. He currently lives and works in New York. Over the past two decades, the photographer’s photos have become synonymous with a non-standard and provocative look at many celebrities.

Russell James got his first job when he was 14 years old: he left school and got a job at a garbage can factory. Over the next decade, he tried his hand at a wide variety of professions: from a dog trainer to a police officer. According to him, all these skills were indispensable on the set.

However, Russell made the final choice of profession only in 1989, after meeting with the photographer Carlo Bosco. James recalls that the process of developing negatives completely captured his imagination - since then he could not think of anything except a photograph with which he decided to connect his life. It was this dream that brought the young man to New York.

For a long time, Russell James’s work went unnoticed until in 1997 he received an offer to remove Tyra Banks for the cover of Sports Illustrated.
