As part of the Parallel Program of the VII Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art.
The Center for Creative Industries "Factory" and EK ArtBuro present the exhibition "Paper Memory" by Chaim Sokol. The project was implemented as part of the Factory Workshops. Session IV ”and is included in the Parallel Program of the VII Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art.
October Technical Paper Factory was founded in 1924. In the post-Soviet era, “Factory”, like many other enterprises in Moscow, turned into a center of cultural production. Over the past 10 years, everything has changed a lot. But the space of the Factory itself in its materiality does not allow us to forget about its past and about those people who once worked here.
The word “paper” means material and document. And this sets two related directions in the work of the artist. For three months, Khaim Sokol studied the archive of the personnel department of the factory, in which documents from the late 30s — personal files, statements, orders, certificates, were preserved. The result of this study was a series of poetic, graphic and video objects. The main characters of all these works were former factory workers, and the main material in the work was paper, which was once produced there.
