All of them taught at the School, and in their works they spoke about what it means to be an artist, demonstrated an author’s visual statement. The New York Metro, which was previously dominated by commercial advertising, suddenly became a platform for the promotion of contemporary art and design. Posters in which aesthetics are not sacrificed for commerce, free of advertising stereotypes, made a splash, bringing a new level of graphics to the New York subway. Like the School itself, posters in the New York subway became inseparable from the city, prompting a creative search.

All 29 artists whose works are presented at the exhibition in the Underground Images project are former and current teachers of the School: Gail Anderson, Marshal Arisman, Jean Keyes, Ivan Chermaev, Paul Davis, Sol DeVito, Louise Fili, Audrey Flack, Nathan Fox, Bob Gill, Robert Justy, Milton Glaser (author of the famous “I Love NY ’logo), Phil Hayes, Stephen Heller, Mirko Ilic, Victor Cohen, Stephen Kreninger, Marvin Mattelson, Clay Patrick McBride, James McMullan, Jerry Moriarty, Tony Palladino, Stefan Sagmeister, David Sandlin, Paula Cher, Yves Sonneman, George Czerny, James Victor and Robert Weaver.

The School of Fine Arts has been a leader in art and design education for over six decades. From the American side, the exhibition is overseen by SVA Vice President Anthony P. Rhodes. Organizers of the exhibition: SVA Lecturer Mirko Ilic, Director of the SVA Gallery Francis Di Tommaso. The organizer of the exhibition on the Russian side is the designer, founder and editor-in-chief of the Projector magazine, Mitya Kharshak. On the opening day of the exhibition, the School of Visual Arts will be presented by Mirko Ilić.
