A unique program composed of works that imitate the singing of various birds. From the nightingale and the lark to the swallows and hummingbirds.
Imitation of birdsong is one of the oldest artistic techniques in music. Composers of all eras used feathered singing in their works. The works of ancient authors are known in which imitation of birds was used. Then there were compositions by medieval minstrels and French harpsichord composers. In the XX century, the composer Olivier Messian liked to wander through the forests of different countries with a music book and recorded bird singing, screaming and chirping, later reproducing these notes in musical works. He published them in collections, and classified the birds with the care of an ornithologist. In Russian musical culture, bird singing was also very popular, nightingales and larks are very common.
One section of the concert is dedicated only to nightingales, both Russian and foreign: Tchaikovsky, Varlamov, Stravinsky, Berg, Alyabyev… In another section, a variety of birds are represented. This is a hummingbird, bullfinch, canary, wren, swan, swallow and so on.
Some of the pieces performed are so rare that they can hardly be heard elsewhere. Another feature of this concert: the works sound in five (!) Languages.
Flute player Natalya Kapustina takes part in the concert. And this is no coincidence. Flute is the instrument closest in sound to birdsong and harmoniously combined with lyrical-coloratura soprano.
