From January 30 to March 21, 2020, in the ABRAMOVA GALLERY space in ARTPLAY SPb will be a personal exhibition of Yuri Kartavtsev “Homo Confusus” (“Confused Man”). It will present more than 25 works by the artist from Omsk.
In a new series of works, Yuri Kartavtsev reflects on a person in the modern world and how he perceives this world. The hero of his paintings is a man who does not have time to adapt to the rapid changes of modern civilization. Before him, the old ones collapse and new principles of social structure are being erected. New technologies visually change the world, values, culture of behavior. Homo confusus balances at the turn of the epochs, now delightedly fading away from the speed and rhythm of the new time, then confusedly unfolding to the past, to the beginning of the 20th century.
In the works of the project, the author balances between abstraction and figurativeness, either distorting the object, as in a crooked mirror, or hiding it in pasty painting. “Several storylines in one work can unexpectedly overlap and intertwine, giving rise to completely new images from the viewer. This becomes an exciting game of the author with the audience, ”says Yuri Kartavtsev.
Works from the Homo Confusus cycle, giving rise to various associations, dynamics and internal tension, give the viewer the freedom of their own perception, make you feel the breath of a new time and reveal familiar objects in unexpected angles.
Yuri Kartavtsev was born in 1964 in the city of Kalachinsk, Omsk Region. Graduated from the Art and Graphic Department of OMGPI named after Gorky. Member of the Union of Artists of Russia since 2003. Participant in more than 80 Russian and international exhibitions in Russia, Europe, the USA, Latin America. A. Vrubel, City Museum "Art of Omsk", Novokuznetsk State Art Museum, Tomsk Regional Art Museum, Siberian Auction House.
