“Ears do not grow above the forehead”, “Looking at the bell, you won’t learn to ring”, “When there are many hands, the work is argued” and other well-known proverbs and sayings are widely used in oral speech to this day, through which it is preserved from generation to generation the national artistic tradition is transmitted. This area of folklore is an inexhaustible source of inspiration not only for language researchers, but also for contemporary artists. The visual accompaniment of proverbs and sayings gives a brighter and more visual meaning to centuries-old wisdom.
One of the clearest examples of the rethinking of oral folk art is the graphic series by Alexander Ryzhkin. As if having made a temporary journey, laconic expressions appear before contemporaries in the artist’s works.
The world of Russian fairy tales, proverbs and sayings will literally open up before the viewer at the exhibition. Plots born of the wisdom of the people, associative genetic chains linking the past and the present, are embodied in graphic sheets. Full of soft irony, funny and sometimes grotesque characters of the artist’s works make you look at everyday situations in a person’s life with a fresh look.
In search of an expressive language, the author turns to the most unusual forms: engravings and author’s CG graphics.
