“You are with me again, foggy visions,
I flickered in my youth for a long time…
Will you be kept in the grip of inspiration?
Have dreams been given again? ”
Johann Wolfgang Goethe
Faust
Pavel Markianovich Kozyr was born in 1947 in Moscow. In 1971 he graduated from the Moscow Art School at the Institute. IN AND. Surikov in the class of painting. Then the Higher School of Industrial Art (formerly Stroganov). In 1975 he became a member of the USSR Union of Artists. He is a laureate of the Leo Tolstoy Prize in Yasnaya Polyana, a laureate of the prize of the Moscow Komsomol, has a diploma of the Ministry of Agriculture.
He began his career as an artist as a child, studying at the House of Pioneers with the sculptor V.A. Vatagina. Already at the Moscow Art School, he received recognition in the artistic environment of his colleagues (First Prize about the Second World War), many of whom fought. Collectors drew attention to the work of Pavel Kozyr when he was a student at the Stroganov Institute. His work was awarded to almost all delegations who came to Moscow on official visits. The author’s works are in the collection of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, with V.V. Putin, Patriarch Alexy II, Fidel Castro, King of Spain, in private collections in Russia, Great Britain, Bahrain, Switzerland, France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Cuba, America.
The exhibition “From the diary” is a kind of retrospective. On it, viewers will see the works created by the artist in different years in the form of sketches from diaries, and some works of the last period. These are not preparatory drawings for genre paintings, but independent finished works containing a special visual narrative, their own figurative language, and illustrations of the author’s personal history. Among them, for example, are the works of the late 80s, united by the common theme of the creator’s loneliness in the world around him, populated by “respectable” inhabitants firmly on the earth, as if anchored, holding on to the rigidity of self-consciousness: “Russian Diogenes”, “Sketch of the“ Palace of the Soviets ”,“ This is disgusting to me ”,“ The Prodigal Son ”, as well as two works of 2015:“ Flowers of War ”and“ Centaur and Amazon ”. These drawings on the technique of execution combine conventionality and, even, a certain malignity of the radical branches of the Russian avant-garde of the early twentieth century with an elegant touch in the spirit of the best draftsmen of the Northern Renaissance.
The connection of times, the immutability and self-repeatability of the life cycle of a thinking, creating person in the context of the history of a particular country is a clearly visible paradigm in the work of Pavel Kozyr. This paradigm determines the way of artistic expression of the image through the combination of avant-garde and traditional visual techniques (The Tower of Babel, 1971, The Phantom of Communism, triptych, 2004) And, although graphics are by no means a leading trend in the artist’s work, however the format of the works presented at the exposition places the viewer in reflection and introspection, making the exhibition so relevant. The theme of memories, personal history, personal myth is close to everyone and that is why it causes a lively response from a wide audience.
The one-day exhibition is open for visiting on October 2, 2015 from 18:00 to 22:00
