Felix Volosenkov was born in the city of Krasnoarmeysk, Donetsk region in 1944. He graduated from the Art College of Baku. Then in 1970 - the Leningrad State Institute of Music, Theater and Cinematography as a production designer. The desire for creative freedom, the thirst for experiment, built the creative history of the artist himself as a theatrical play with his own characters and intrigue. Since 1977, F. Volosenkov has been working in the theater, where he designed about fifty projects in Russia and abroad (Moscow Art Theater, Moscow, Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg, Maly Opera and Ballet Theater, St. Petersburg, etc.). In parallel from 1979 to 1989 taught at the art studio of the Tsuryupa Palace of Culture. Since 1984, Felix Volosenkov has been exhibiting together with Valery Lucca and Vyacheslav Mikhailov, creating the Three Heroes group, which has overthrown the picturesque canons, and preceded the St. Petersburg Academy of Contemporary Art of the Immortals, which it founded, which aims to support and develop new trends in contemporary art.
Researchers do not undertake to determine the style or direction in which the artist works. Irony and grotesque, unrestrained energy and touching - all this is equally inherent in the works of Volosenkov, created as if in one breath. They do not leave anyone indifferent. Wide erudition and the desire for lapidary forms, a peculiar pictorial newspeak are inalienable authorial creative qualities. Art historians tend to state the uniqueness and organics of his works, which are not amenable to classification. “His painting is a realm of redundancy, meaningfully - a merciless, romantic rebellion against a priori. These are the verbal-plastic meanings necessary for him, which cannot be reduced either to a word or to an image, that is, phenomena. ” “There are no painstakingly written paintings here, but there is a whole waterfall of flowers and houses, summer cottages, laughing horses, butterflies, goats, officers with epaulettes, writers with beards, monuments on pedestals and everything else that hurries to live in a dopad, as if it’s already a little time left. Just to be in time and capture what is seen. "
Dostoevsky, oil on canvas, 181x83cm, 2011.
Love, betrayal, sacrifice, the miracle of birth and being are all united by the element of creativity of F. Volosenkov. Equally complex, unexpected and multidimensional technique of his works. The artist’s works are textured: they use fabric, foam rubber, gesso, acrylic paints - everything that with maximum accuracy can embody what he “heard”. “In it, Felix Volosenkov, the almost lost type of a great artist was clearly identified, inclined to help the world and restore order in it, like the vital builders-demiurges of the 20s. Connecting the world and painting is impossible. But… it’s only impossible and worth doing… Without fully embodying in any work, he wanders along the diverging paths of being and dictates a single painting book, a verbal-plastic text… And the creator intends, is obliged, is doomed to simply exist, being and manifesting, to be part of the world behaving as a whole. "
The exhibition runs until January 31, 2016.
