His works are included in the golden fund of Russian culture. Well-known illustrations by D. Shmarinov to the works of A. Pushkin - “Belkin’s Tales”, “Dubrovsky”, “The Captain’s Daughter”, “The Queen of Spades”, novels by L. N. Tolstoy “War and Peace”, A. N. Tolstoy’s “Peter the Great”, F. M. Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”, the tragedy of V. Shakespeare “Romeo and Juliet” became classics of Russian fine art.

The artist was awarded high state and professional awards. In 1943, he was awarded the USSR State Prize for a series of easel drawings of 1942, "Do not forget, do not forgive!". D.A.Shmarinov - Winner of the Lenin Prize in 1980, was awarded the Order of Lenin, two orders of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals of the USSR. The work of D.A.Shmarinov is highly appreciated by the international art community.

The master’s works are included in the collections of the largest Russian museums.

For many years, D.A.Shmarinov led the creative workshop of the Academy of Arts of the USSR in Moscow, served as chairman of the Board of the Moscow Union of Artists of the RSFSR, was a member of the Presidium, academician-secretary of the department of graphics of the Academy of Arts of the USSR.
