“Oleg Lang. In the park of Chair ”is the name of the exhibition project, which will be held in the ARTSTORY gallery from September 20 to November 18, 2018. Painting on canvas and burlap, on ornamental fabrics and on striped mattress covers, as well as painted palettes and tablets, is not a complete list of artifacts that will be presented at the exhibition. The exhibition will include works from many of Lang’s series and cycles, starting from the 1980s, when the artist gained fame, and until the last days of his life.
Oleg Lang was born in the city of Novomoskovsk, Tula Region in 1950, died suddenly in 2013, literally until the very last day, continuing to work on paintings. Based on chronological principles, it is often referred to as the “eighties” - the generation of artists who came to art in the late Soviet years, when the unshakable principles of socialist realism gave a noticeable crack and the ideas of the Russian avant-garde began to spread and even be encouraged in the creative environment, with its “bubovovietovskoy” thirst to primitivism, the principles of pop art and abstract expressionism. The densely mixed mix made up of these creative achievements of the past and the present created the unique, recognizable style of Oleg Lang.
The artist’s series are devoted to very fundamental topics: war and peace, the history of Russia, the family and the patrimonial past, myths, culture, religion. Distracted, abstract meanings captivate masters to the same extent as amusing stories about the loss of a shoe or stereotypical plots of human life, which seem to be one eternal and the other banal. A parallel reality invariably appears before the viewer, populated by the “inhabitants of the time”, in which all archaeological layers of memory are mixed.
Primitive and naive, urban genre folklore and expressionistic fragmentation of the landscape - all this can be called characteristic motives of the artist. They are harmoniously based on the materials used by Lang: cubic bars- “planks” with archaic figures moving from side to side; canvas mattress covers, which seem to be part of the author’s artistic intentions; finally, colored fabrics, which the artist actively included in the composition. Such, by the way, is the work “In the park of Chair”, which gave the name to the whole exhibition.
Here is what the art critic Alexander Yakimovich writes about Lang: “Strictly speaking, he is not an abstractionist, because for all his unbridled passion for spots, geometric shapes and uncontrolled stains of paint, he can’t part with a story, illustration, variation on a theme, and the theme business comes from literature. ”
Not without reason, in the manner of writing the artist, art critics see associations with the style of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the “new wilds” - contemporaries of Lang, as well as his predecessors - Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova. Sometimes whole periods in his work were occupied by writing hundreds of tiny tablets and canvases, in the palm of a size, with two or three spots or stripes. Sometimes these were months of work on monumental polyptychs that raised planetary themes of the complexity of being.
The artist’s works are presented in a permanent exhibition of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, a number of large provincial museums, and are also stored in many private collections.
Every day, except Mondays, from 12.00 to 20.00. Free admission.
