The Museum of Moscow will open an exhibition dedicated to George the Victorious - one of the most beloved and revered Russian saints. The exhibition is dedicated to the Day of St. George the Victorious, which is celebrated on May 6.
The history of Moscow, its socio-political, cultural and spiritual life is inextricably linked with the image of St. George. The exhibition will include items from the collection of the Museum of Moscow with the image of St. George the Victorious: paintings, coins, ceramic dishes, mosaic and textile panels, batik, beadwork, felt and metal.
The central exhibit will be a painting by the Greek artist Kostas Efimidis "St. George the Victorious." The painting is a gift to Moscow from the Greeks of Russia to the 870th anniversary of the city. May 6, on the day of the celebration of St. George, this gift will be solemnly transferred to the city.
The theme of George the Victorious received deep understanding in the works of outstanding Russian artists: Kandinsky, Larionov, Goncharova, Filonov, Nesterov, Vasnetsov. The masterpieces of painting and graphics combined into one video projection will demonstrate to the viewer the variety of plot and stylistic interpretations of this significant and multifaceted image.
Images of the saint can be seen on coins, the coat of arms of the Russian Federation and the coat of arms of Moscow, the standard of which is in the collection of the Museum of Moscow and will be presented at the exhibition.
The rich composition of the exhibition will allow you to deeply understand and feel the unique energy of the canon of St. George - capacious, monumental - which over the centuries has helped to build the dramaturgy of icons, fairy tales, epics, ballads, folk songs, everyday texts, secular literature, and avant-garde visual culture.
The exhibition will be held from April 27 to May 27.
