On October 2, 2020, the Gilyarovsky Center, a branch of the Museum of Moscow, will open the exhibition "The Reverse Side of the Metro" dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Moscow Metro, one of the most famous and popularly loved monuments of the capital.

And how many trains are simultaneously moving along all branches? The exposition will tell about the special world of the metro, closed from prying eyes.

As part of the project, the curators of the Museum of Moscow, together with the artists of the Sezon Art Group, have been exploring the hidden life of the underground for several months. They visited closed depots, substations and repair shops, capturing their internal structure and structure.

As a result of this kind of creative trip, the artists created realistic canvases depicting these subway places. And the designer of the Museum of Moscow, Anna Skrzhinskaya, created photographs in which the paintings were handed over to real metro workers. The camera captures the symbiosis of real life and artistic image, living people and their portraits.

Visitors to the exhibition "The Reverse Side of the Metro" will learn about those who drive and service trains, fix broken seats, monitor the operation of escalators, and ensure safety. These people do colossal work on a daily basis that passengers rarely notice. The project presents their stories about their own profession.

In addition, guests of the Gilyarovsky Center will see genuine items from the Metro Museum - traffic lights, fragments of rails, stencils, control room, train schedules.

The project will also feature video works by the architect Ilya Voznesensky and photographer Alexei Naroditsky, which capture the "hidden" elements of the subway - details and design that we often do not notice in the noise of the city’s main thoroughfare.

The exhibition will run until November 8, 2020.
