In recent years, elements of the Russian style are increasingly appearing in contemporary design around the world - from fashion shows of famous fashion designers to the design and construction of wooden houses in the national style.
Old Russian traditions in modern design are part of the scientific and practical project of the Russian Academy of Arts, which has been implemented since 2014 at the site of the largest unique archaeological site in Russia, the Old Town of Ryazan.
The main objective of the project is to help modern designers plunge into the world of ancient Russia, to study the skill and knowledge of our ancestors, which were transmitted from century to century, and are still at a subconscious level are close and easily perceived by the current generation. Reviving national traditions and transmitting images through modern design, the new generation has the opportunity to gain lost knowledge and restore the connection of time.
The pre-Mongol period is called the "golden age" of Russian art. And now, in many ways, the only way to study Russian culture before the Tatar-Mongol invasion is to study archaeological works of the period 10-13 centuries. A detailed study of objects and methods of their production reveals important new elements and technologies that may be applicable in the development of modern design.
Within the framework of the “Modernity and Traditions” project, the following events are held: the research conference “Ancient Russian art in contemporary design”, an exhibition and a round table where designers can plunge into the past, learn about the life and culture of their ancestors, study medieval craft traditions, blacksmith and jewelry technologies production, manufacture of glass, ceramics and much more. Participants can also meet with archaeologists and museum workers, compare ancient and modern art.
The project of the Russian Academy of Arts allows you to comprehensively explore the traditions of ancient Russian art, present contemporary art and inspire new projects based on national traditions.
