The Pushkin Museum. A.S. Pushkin on August 24 will take part in the All-Russian action "Cinema Night-2019". A discussion will be held in the museum, which will traditionally be held by the curators of the Moscow School of Cinema Addis Gadzhiev ("Artistic Production") and Vsevolod Korshunov ("Practical Film Criticism"). The topic of conversation will be the legacy of the era of modernism in the cinema and the relationship of films with the main trends in the art of the XX century.
Cinema of the 1920s actively and fruitfully developed in the era of modernism. Such trends as impressionism, expressionism, dada, futurism, surrealism became the most important screen styles, and not only of the 1920s, they influenced the further development of cinema. Impressionist films "Delluk’s Fever" and Epstein’s "Faithful Heart" began a line of poetic cinema, which led to Vigo’s Atalanta, Carne’s Mist Quay and films of the thaw period in the USSR. Dr. Caligari’s Expressionist Cabinet, Vine responded to Wells Citizen Kane, Curtis’s Casablanca, noir style and horror genre. The futuristic experiments of Marinetti and Braggalla, as well as the Dadaist opuses of Leger and Ruttman, paved the way for abstract cinema, neo-avant-garde and video art. The rebellious energy of the surreal "Andalusian dog" of Bunuel and Dali echoed in the paintings of Alain Rene, Vera Khitilova and David Lynch.
The presenters of this discussion, using examples of excerpts from films, will tell and show how diverse the cinema of the 1920s became under the influence of currents of modernism and what impact it had on subsequent generations of directors.
