The Shchusev State Museum of Architecture opened an exhibition of photographs of modern architecture “Moscow. The Real”, which makes it possible to see the updated architectural appearance of the capital and evaluate the changes that have taken place over the past decade.
The restored House of Narkomfin, the Museum of Russian Impressionism, Zaryadye Park, HPP-2, the Luzhniki Grand Sports Arena appear in monochrome works by the best architectural photographers in Moscow. More than half of the photographic works have not previously been presented to the general public.
The organizers are the Moscow Committee for Architecture and the Government of Moscow. Elizaveta Likhacheva, director of the Shchusev Museum of Architecture, was the curator of the project.
The organizers have chosen 33 objects from the many buildings that have already become legendary, which are presented at the exhibition in photographs and models.
The State Museum of Architecture named after A. V. Shchusev does not refer to the architecture of the past, but sums up the results of the last decade and even looks into the future, noting the importance of the process and the need to fix it.
Elizaveta Likhacheva: “A very important process is taking place in Moscow today. We see that architecture is becoming more important than construction. The name of the architect comes to the fore and his personal responsibility for the project increases significantly. Faceless buildings are leaving, developers have come to understand that the name of the architect is part of the marketing strategy of the project. At the exhibition, we talk about modern architecture through photography. In fact, we talk about art through art. I expect that the exhibition will be popular, because photography is contemporary painting.”
At the opening, the chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov, who is the author of the idea of the exhibition, explained why the project summarizes his ten-year work and explained the importance of popularizing modern architecture: “We have collected 33 projects and the exhibition itself is the 34th one. A new cultural layer is being created in the city, a completely new architecture, but it is dissolving into a huge metropolis. The exhibition is the quintessence of what is happening in the city. Our main goal is to make the work of architects visible. The authors must receive recognition, and this recognition will further motivate them to create conceptual projects, a modern cultural layer.”
