A boat shimmering by a shaky silhouette under the moon resembling a bullet hole. Oily like oil, a loaf of black bread, cut in two - either with a quick chef’s knife, or with a scimitar. The white shirt is almost a baptismal, almost a shroud…
ZNUI Gallery and Artcultivator present the exhibition of the artist Mikhail Kaban-Petrov “Time. Canvas. Oil". The author admits that he writes not things, but phenomena: phenomenon-bread, phenomenon-boat, phenomenon-landscape. Summarizing and reworking the form almost to an abstraction, the artist stops at the very horizon of the material world - where objects are only guessed and events are no longer likely. It is in this stillness, having renounced the transience of the modern world, one can try to comprehend the essence of things and understand time.
The exposition presents more than 30 works created by the author in recent years.
The exhibition runs until April 17th. ZNUI Gallery and Artcultivator are planning a meeting with the artist (the date will be announced later).
Mikhail Kaban-Petrov, born in 1966 in the village of Reshety, Novosibirsk Region. He graduated from the New Altai Art College, in 1996 he graduated from the Moscow State Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov (easel painting, V. M. Sidorov’s workshop).
Mikhail Kaban-Petrov: “I, a teenager who lived in a Siberian village, had no opportunity to study either in a studio or in an art school, we simply didn’t have them, because admission after 8th grade to ZNUI became the only possible art education in the last two school years. I sent my works on a given topic to the capital, and from there I received an envelope twice a month, in which there was a letter from the teacher with an analysis of my work and new assignments. Sometimes textbooks and even art albums came from ZNUI. Studying at ZNUI made me work twice as much, because, according to the rules of the work, the authors were not sent back, I also had to write for myself. I remember that time with special warmth. ”
