From August 10 to September 4, the All-Russian Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art, as part of the cycle “Born of October”, will host the exhibition “The World of Miniatures by Mikhail Rakov. To the 125th anniversary of the artist. ” The exhibition will feature the works of Mikhail Dmitrievich Rakov and the works of masters of folk art crafts, made according to the artist’s sketches from the Museum’s collection, as well as archival materials of the Vologda State Museum-Reserve, as well as works and documents from the artist’s family collection.
Part of the exhibits will be presented for the first time.

Rakov Mikhail Dmitrievich (1892-1971) - master of carving and engraving on bone and metal, animal sculptor, teacher. Born in Totma of the Vologda province in a family of hereditary noblemen Dmitry Nikolaevich and Anastasia Pavlovna Rakovy. The ancient noble family of the Cancers was known in the Russian North since the 16th century and was closely connected with the economic, cultural and social life of the region. Mikhail Dmitrievich began his creative and professional activities as a sculptor and artist in one of the most famous Russian enterprises, leaders of the world jewelry industry of the twentieth century - the company Karl Faberge. Natural talent and delicate taste only improved and allowed him to carry through his whole life the high culture of this unique art production, applying the skills and traditions of the Russian jewelry school in the work to preserve and develop Russian art crafts and the culture of Russian decorative miniature.
According to his projects, starting from the 1920s, masters of Kholmogorsk bone carving worked, from the 1930s - black-print engraving in Veliky Ustyug, in the 1950s - Zlatoust art engraving on steel, Mstersky lacquer painting, Rostov enamel and Kaslinsky casting. From 1925 to the 1960s Mikhail Rakov was an active participant in the International Exhibitions in Paris (1925, 1937), Milan in 1927 (Diploma), All-Russian and All-Union Exhibitions (Diploma, 1942).
Mikhail Dmitrievich had a significant impact on the revival, formation and development of the handicraft industry of the USSR, and stood at the origins of the composition of the national art school of traditional Russian art crafts.
