“Russia can recognize itself and its calling in the world only in the light of the problems of East and West. It stands at the center of the eastern and western worlds and can be defined as the East-West… Russia should become for Europe an internal and not an external force, a creatively transforming force ”
N.A. Berdyaev
The East-West exhibition presents more than 100 works of 70 artists from the West (France, Germany, USA, Italy, Latvia, Poland) and the East (Japan, Korea, China) who live in Russia or are connected with her origin or family ties. Artists from different regions of Russia also participate in the exhibition.
Each artist reflected in the plot, in the idea, in the material the clash of the western and eastern systems of attitude to the world, traditions and marking signs. This is a defiantly “empty” construction of Western architecture by Igor Shelkovsky (France), and a composition using Chinese fortunetelling tablets Evelina Schatz (Italy), and a paradoxical combination of classic Japanese plots with samples of Western pop culture from Japanese Minako Ota, working in Russia. A girl in a lace cape, as in a veil (Eugenia Jaeger, Germany), stands on a red-white “border”, hanging in a void. The abstraction of Andrei Kim (Russia-Korea) grows into a hieroglyph, which, not being a letter of the alphabet, always has a specific meaning and depicts a concept. Mikhail Roshnyak (Russia) works with the land as an artistic material, emphasizing the unity of West and East on the same land.
The problem of East and West, in essence, has always been the main theme of world history, its axis, and the European balance has always been a conditional structure. The reverse movement from West to East, apparently, is an internally inevitable dialectic of European culture. Russia in this context becomes a "territory of creativity", where the West moves to the East.
