Sergey Milchenko, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, belongs to a galaxy of bright, distinctive masters of contemporary Russian sculpture. The artist confidently entered into great art with his theme of a religious-biblical character, philosophically meaningful and emotionally experienced. His works: “Entry into Jerusalem”, “The Case in the Garden of Gethsemane”, “Kiss of Judas”, “The Last Supper” and others became symbolic for Russian art of the late XX - early XXI century. These are multi-figured sculptural compositions, significant in terms of the strength of the emotional impact and completeness of the plastic solution.
CM. Milchenko was born in 1962 in the Moscow region. He graduated from Moscow secondary art school, in 1985 - Kharkov Art and Industrial Institute. His early compositions: “A Girl from the Village of Passages”, “Grandchildren Left”, “Me and the Horse” and others were distinguished by a combination of folk tradition and the sophistication of classical art. The culmination of this period was a generalized and whole image, coming from the style of the Parsuna — the sculpture “Bogdan Khmelnitsky” with its solemnity, vivid color, a synthesis of the Slavic spirit and European sculptural medieval tradition.
The beginning of the 1990s is the time of the artist’s creative maturity. He creates compositions: “The Annunciation”, “Christ in the dark”, “Saved the midnight”, “The Man”, “The case in the Garden of Gethsemane”, where the tragic content of great betrayal and the conquering sacred are associative, extremely generalized and at the same time psychologically expressed. the theme of the great holiday is resurrection.
The Agasfer stone made in stone gave the textured image an elevated spirituality. This work laid the foundation for S. Milchenko’s experiments in creating his own original iconography.

Sculptures by S. Milchenko are made in different styles and materials. The gospel stories are dominated by Romanesque and East Slavic traditions. The first is expressed in stone ("Entry into Jerusalem", "The Last Supper", "Descent from the Cross", "Resurrection of Christ", "Ascension"), the second - in a tree ("Midnight Savior", "Guardian Angel", "Return the prodigal son ”and others). In them, the artist is not afraid of borrowing, historical reminiscences, preserving the identity, which is based on direct empathy.
As the academician of the Russian Academy of Arts A. Rukavishnikov writes, “his biblical stories create a mysterious and solemn space around him, the surface of the stone is such that it protects the volume, and does not cater to the average man with a variety of textures…”.
In portraits and portrait compositions: “Dante”, “Picasso on bullfighting in Vallauris”, “Denis Davydov”, “Princess Sophia”, “Composer A. Alyabyev” and others, in etudes - there is a monumental beginning in all easel sculptures.
In compositions made in the genre of “nude” (“Cleopatra”, “Dance of Salome”, “Judith”, etc.), the artist explores the plastic possibilities of the form, emphasizes its tension and expressive silhouette, decorative material.
S. Milchenko works both in easel and in monumental plastic. He performed: "Crucifixion" for the church with. Troitskoye, Moscow Region, reliefs: “The Taking of Ismail,” “Assault on the Devil’s Bridge” for the monument to Alexander Suvorov in Catherine’s Park in Moscow, the royal and deacon’s gates for the baptismal church “In the Name of All New Martyrs of Russia” in Petrovsky Park in Moscow, a monument to Andrei the First-Called in Kharkov, a memorial to the victims of the fascist occupation of Crimea 1941-1944. in Simferopol and others.
The sculptor performed a number of works for foreign churches: the composition “The Midnight Savior” for the Ascension Church (Woodchester, Great Britain), the remote cross for the cathedral (Lancaster, Great Britain), the bishop’s staff and the thimble cross for the cathedral (Vitby, Great Britain), as well as the sculptural Deesis and the remote cross for the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Walsingham, Great Britain), etc.
According to the poet and publicist G. Krasnikov, Milchenko’s works are “either philosophical tracts, gospel parables, ancient myths and traditions… His statues are heroes and villains, sinners and righteous characters on the stage of history. S. Milchenko perfectly organizes stage-scenes, adding more and more characters to the world drama… ”.
The sculptor’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in many museums in Russia and foreign collections in the USA, France, Holland, England and other countries.
The exhibition runs until May 14, 2017.
