Alexey Popov is a St. Petersburg saxophonist, arranger, composer. Graduated from the jazz department of the Music College named after I. M.P. Mussorgsky. His teacher is the famous Gennady Holstein. Alexey made his debut in Moscow, in the big band of the railway troops, in 1991. In 199-93 years. played in the Zapovednik group, then in the New Band ensemble of guitarist Ildar Kazakhanov. Collaborated with vocalist Natalya Platitsina, toured Europe with the pop group "NOM" (as a keyboard player). In 1995-97 he worked in the Flip Fantasia group, and in 1997 he organized the Doo Bop Sound sextet with Alexei Nikonov and Igor Shilov.
At the beginning of the XXI century, Alexey Popov entered the top three leading modern saxophonists in St. Petersburg. His playing is notable for technical excellence and powerful energy when playing funk and jazz-rock and a soft velvety sound of the instrument in lyrical ballads. In parallel with the arrangements and compositions for the Doo Bop Sound group, he managed to create two more notable projects in the city and in Russia - the Four & More quartet performing traditional hard bop, and together with the Russian-German vocalist Lera Gechner - the Lera and Friends group…
