The Museum of Moscow will open a traditional archaeological exhibition. This year it is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Russian archeology.
Each year, the Museum of Moscow hosts archaeological exhibitions telling about the specifics of this science in the modern world. The project of 2019 is called “Pit - Excavation - Museum” and is dedicated to the stages of the work of scientists in a modern metropolis and archaeological study of the capital.
Among the exhibits are an old toy gun made of white metal, found in the area of Goncharnaya Embankment, coins of a treasure hidden before the First World War, and a rich collection of tiles from the beginning of the 18th century, found in the area of Pyatnitskaya Street. Their symbolism was understandable to a man of the past, but it is not always obvious to our contemporaries. A dog is a metaphor for friendship and devotion, but the meanings of such images as a dog on a chain or a bird with a snake in its beak are mysterious for people of the 21st century. You can try to find their true meaning at the new archaeological exhibition of the Museum of Moscow.
Ekaterina Svyatitskaya, curator of the exhibition: “The new archaeological project of the Museum of Moscow focuses on the“ freshest ”finds of recent months, taken literally“ from under the shovel. ” We invite children and adults, students and schoolchildren to the exhibition - everyone who is interested in the history of Moscow. Indeed, “Pit - Excavation - Museum“ is not only a museum result of the summer archaeological season of this year, but also a story about the history of Moscow archeology ”.
Structurally, the exhibition is divided into three parts. The first section, “Pit”, is devoted to the museumification of archaeological sites located in the thickness of the urban cultural layer. In this part, fragments of the stairs of the medieval basement found on the territory of Kitai Gorod and rails of the late 19th century with brands of manufacturers will be exhibited.
"Excavation" will reflect the security activities of archaeologists studying Moscow and the Moscow region. Looking through the “windows” in the tarpaulin, visitors will see not only the field archaeological laboratory, but also the unrepaired artifacts discovered recently: the rusted primus and the giant concrete head of the astronaut, found during excavations at Yauza.
The third section, “Museum”, will tell how objects found by scientists in Moscow and the Moscow Region become full-fledged museum exhibits. The objects of this part of the exhibition are the most unusual and rare archaeological artifacts from the collection of the Moscow Museum: a porcelain cork in the form of a male head, chain mail recreated from sintered metal, a hat of the eighteenth century, almost perfectly preserved at the bottom of the well, and fragments of the plate “Fight at Chemulpo” created in 1905 in memory of the battles of the Russo-Japanese War.
