In the halls of the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts, an exhibition project is opening dedicated to the life and work of the legend of Russian ballet, an unsurpassed specialist in the field of training professional dancers, People’s Artist of the USSR Sofya Nikolaevna Golovkina (1915-2004). The basis of the exposition, dedicated to the Year of the Teacher and Mentor in Russia, will be stage costumes, personal items, posters for performances, pictorial and graphic portraits of the dancer, as well as unique photographs from the family archive, provided by the granddaughter and curator of the exhibition Sofya Gaidukova.
S. N. Golovkina is a graduate of the Moscow Choreographic School, a student of such famous teachers as Alexander Chekrygin, Fyodor Lopukhov, Agrippina Vaganova, Elizaveta Gerdt, Maria Kozhukhova. In 1933, she was accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet Company, actively participated in the development of its modern repertoire, performing leading, solo parts staged by major choreographers - Vasily Vainonen, Rostislav Zakharov and others. During the Great Patriotic War, Sofya Nikolaevna remained in Moscow and performed in performances and at concerts that took place both on the stage and in hospitals. According to critics, she was a strong, technical ballerina, her dance technique was distinguished by refinement and virtuosity.
After 26 years of tireless work, Golovkina left the stage and returned to the walls of the Moscow Choreographic School as a teacher. One of the sections of the exposition will tell about her contribution to the development of the Moscow ballet school. A deep understanding of the new requirements of the theatre, a broad outlook, and an unquenchable creative temperament of an experimenter helped Sofya Nikolaevna to prove herself as a talented teacher and leader. Among her students and wards are Natalya Bessmertnova, Irek Mukhamedov, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Maria Alexandrova, Ilze Liepa and several generations of ballerinas and soloists of the Bolshoi Theater.
Being the rector of the Moscow State Academy of Choreography from 1960 to 2001, she made a significant contribution to the development of Russian dance art. Thanks to her work, in 1961 the school was awarded the title of "academic", courses for the training and improvement of teachers from different countries were opened, the repertoire was updated, much attention was paid to teaching male dance and stage practice. In 1967, the most important event for the school took place: the academic year began in a new building on 2nd Frunzenskaya Street, and twenty years later the Moscow State Choreographic Institute (MGHI) was opened on its basis, designed to train teachers, choreographers, choreographers, and, for the first time in history, performers of the highest qualification and accompanists.
During the days of the exhibition there will be guided tours with curator Sofia Gaidukova. One of them will be held on April 26 as part of a free visit to the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts. Everyone can take part in the event.
