On August 28 at 19:00 the Perm Gallery will present a new program dedicated to the music of the Silver Age. The concert “These Summer Nights” will feature the vocal works of two brilliant composers of the turn of the century, Sergei Rachmaninov and Nikolai Cherepnin.
Rachmaninov’s romances are well known to the general public. Most of them are written on the texts of Russian lyric poets of the XIX-XX centuries and are associated with the Russian song tradition. Also, the vocal works of the composer are distinguished by a complex, sometimes coming to the fore, piano accompaniment.
The creative heritage of Cherepnin, being forgotten in Soviet times, is not so well known to the viewer today. Meanwhile, Sergei Diaghilev called the latter one of the “most famous figures of music, painting, choreography” of his time. The central place in the work of the master was occupied by ballets and orchestral works. It was Cherepnin who was the first composer to write music for the Russian seasons commissioned by the great impresario. It was the ballet The Armida Pavilion, staged in Paris in 1909. At a concert in the gallery, viewers will hear his vocal works from the series “Fairy Tales” written on poems by Konstantin Balmont, as well as Rachmaninov’s romances “Prayer”, “How It Hurts Me”, “Daisies”, “These Summer Nights”.
Refined, exciting, surprisingly sincere and contemplative music will be performed by performers of the Perm Opera Olga Popova (soprano), Alexei Gerasimov (baritone) and Kristina Basyul (piano).
