The E.K. ArtBureau gallery will host the first solo exhibition of graphic works by Vasily Shomov, “ROOMS”, for which the author chose the lines of Joseph Brodsky’s poem “Don’t leave the room, don’t make a mistake…” as an epigraph.
The ROOMS cycle, started during the pandemic, is dedicated to understanding the home as a place of forced confinement and, at the same time, a saving refuge. The world has shrunk to the size of a shelter with a number on the door through which it is impossible to leave, limited by the lines of a square image on A4 paper.
Shomov’s "ROOMS" are devoid of human presence. These are strange, simplified, laconic spaces with broken geometry and perspective and formally present furniture, devoid of utility due to its instability.
"ROOMS" is a subconscious feeling of a closed life, which, in order not to seem empty, is compensatorily filled with memories, fantasies and the aftertaste of the stories that once took place in it.
At the same time, the author expanded the series "NEAR SPACE", the idea for which arose in the early 90s. The atmosphere of inescapable Russian cosmism can be considered an ideological continuation of the "ROOMS" cycle: an exit from the closed circuit of a forced shelter, but not into the present day, but into the peace of deserted unearthly spaces.
The exhibition includes about 100 graphic works created from 2021 to the present, and several paintings from the 1990s.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Vasily Shomov was born in Moscow in 1960. He is a doctor by education, but gained fame in the magazine world as the editor-in-chief and, according to his colleagues, the “patriarch of intellectual gloss.”
Without any artistic education, Vasily drew enthusiastically, experimenting with materials, styles and techniques and inspired by the images of the Russian avant-garde.
