Young artists participating in the Interregional Youth Creative Workshop - the project “Collective Conscious. Dialogues with classics ”- scholarship holders of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia as part of the program of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation to support young artists and artists approved by the Government of the Russian Federation in 2014. Throughout 2015, the project curator Diana Machulina worked with fellows from all over the country.
All participants have a classic professional art education and follow the academic tradition, taking care of the plastic perfection of the statement. However, the question of what is a classic that can be chosen as the basis and guideline for life, the authors do not have a clear answer. “Modernization or tradition?” - this question applies to all areas of life, but the culture among them is leading as the embodiment of the choice reflected in the 92 works of 21 artists presented at the exhibition.
There is no unity of position in the projects of scholarship holders. Among the regional artists represented in the project there are those who have been working in the field of contemporary art for quite some time, and those who are fundamentally opposed to this system or simply not sufficiently informed. One way or another, the participants in this project are authentic representatives of the regions working "on the ground", creating a cultural environment with their works (and sometimes even creating their own art institutions). At the exhibition, conservatives coexist with adherents of gangsta rap, pagans are both an art object and authors, and feminist ideas turn into “Domostroy”.
“It is this difference of opinions and aspirations that I want to show and preserve,” says curator Diana Machulina. “Would you ever call a tree with one root and one branch beautiful?” This, rather, looks like a stick, which is driven in a certain direction. The determination by the participants of such different roots and so different branches of reflection indicates that the choice of direction is a living and personal process. ”
The exhibition, in a sense, is an objective digest of the opinions of the generation that will shape the near future.
