A new exhibition in the palace of the Arkhangelskoye Estate Museum, prepared with the assistance and support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, will tell about the connections of Prince N. B. Yusupov with domestic industry and trade. It will last from July 1 to November 1, 2016.
The farms of a wealthy nobleman are a mirror of the economic development of society. Huge financial resources, production capacities, the best samples of products, the latest literature - all this opened up scope for entrepreneurial activity, sometimes leaving a noticeable mark in the history of the country.
One of these entrepreneurs was Prince Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov (1751–1831), a descendant of a noble Nogai family, the grandson of one of the associates of Peter the Great, the son of the president of the Commerce College and the director of the Ground Cadet Corps. From the late 1780s to the early 1800s, he headed a number of state art productions - Tapestry, Porcelain and Glassworks - as well as the Manufactory College, and then, after retiring, launched a vigorous activity to create his own enterprises and obtain in the management of the state, to increase trade in industrial and agricultural products produced in its numerous estates.
At Yusupov’s textile factories - Ryashkovskaya, Rakityanskaya and Kupavinskaya - they produced about half the cloth needed for the Russian army and high-quality silk fabrics. They were adjoined by lace, linen and carpet factories. At the crystal plants, Tasovsky and Arkhangelsk, produced high-quality glassware. In the Painting Studio in Arkhangelsk, imported "linen" of French and Russian factories was turned into outstanding works of decorative and applied art. Kupavna, near Moscow, also produced paper and watches. Mills, soap factories and saltpeter factories, brick and distilleries were opened, which produced products for sale as well as for their own needs. Yusupov seriously thought about the organization of a new beet sugar production in Russia at that time.
One of the most striking evidence of the deep involvement of N. B. Yusupov in industrial and commercial affairs can be considered his library. This is a collection of economic literature with more than a thousand volumes and covering almost all branches of the economy and sections of economic knowledge, from theoretical to purely applied, as well as the publication of laws regulating economic life. The works of famous European and domestic economists - A. Smith, V. Mirabeau, N. S. Mordvinov, N. I. Turgenev - are side by side with numerous manuals on accounting reporting, directories of industrial and commercial enterprises, and descriptions of domestic and foreign industrial exhibitions. The most representative collection of books related to textile production, reflecting all its stages, from obtaining raw materials to dyeing or bleaching fabrics. The attention of N. B. Yusupov to the technical progress, which is gaining momentum, is evidenced by sets of domestic and foreign magazines, among which French and German periodicals created to publish patents and familiarize the public with technical innovations stand out.
