The Ostrov creative workshop of artists-members of the TLC of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan) presents a project implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts, the Creative Union of Russian Artists and the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The organizers of the project provided artists with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the historical environment of the island-city of Sviyazhsk with its unique monuments of Russian architecture and painting of the 16th-19th centuries and create artistic interpretations of its monuments, the surrounding natural landscape, the people living in it (or ever having anything to do with it).
Karaseva V. “Emigration”, linocut, collage, composite panel, 70x210 cm, 2015
Sviyazhsk - the only place of its kind, separated from the surrounding territories by often insurmountable spaces, remained in its almost original form for many centuries and formed a special island mentality among residents. Today Sviyazhsk combines history and modernity, ancient architectural monuments and the desire for modernization, museumification and the realities of everyday life, the prayer of Orthodox monasticism and the tourist environment, great achievements and monstrous upheavals, contradictions and tragedies of the history of our country.
The comprehension of any phenomenon of history and culture occurs not only through the study of events, biographies of prominent personalities, archival documents, but also through simple things that form the course of life - a house, household items, food, pets, customs, habits, daily affairs that ensure the existence of a person. The close relationships of people in closed systems, such as the islands, their special relationship to the world, combining a kind of worship and at the same time pragmatism, ensure the stable existence and reproduction of the entire system over long historical periods.
Lopatkin A., Tsar Pike ”, oil on canvas 210x70, 2015
Such a view of things allows us to discuss such an important issue for modern society as the ecology of culture, by which we mean the study of a whole complex of relationships of a person in the whole variety of forms of his life, the material and spiritual values created by him, with the surrounding natural and historical environment. This is becoming increasingly important in an age of rapid technological progress, information technology, for which we forget about the integrity of the Man-Nature system and the destructiveness of neglect.
Sviyazhskaya ear
A kind of brand island-city of Sviyazhsk became the ear. Without it, the life of any settlement on the river bank is unthinkable. Over the centuries, fishing has been one of the main occupations of Svizhtsev, providing them with food, income, and entertainment, prompting a special meditative state of mind. Sviyazhsk has its own secrets to cooking fish soup. They fed the ear themselves, treated the ear. Fish soup and fishing have become special brands of the island of hail. Every year, in the fall, holidays are held gathering amateurs and professionals: “Day of the Sviazhskaya soup”, “Catching pikes on the Pike river”, etc. Without diving into these primordial activities of the islanders, it is impossible to comprehend their essence, their features, secrets of the organic interaction of the island and its inhabitants.
The exhibition is open to the public from December 4, 2015 to January 12, 2016 during the opening hours of the Pushkin Museum of Contemporary Art.
