The Stella Art Foundation, the Victoria Gallery (Samara) and the SPHERE Foundation for the Support of Contemporary Art present the exhibition “They Were Uncontrollably Drowning.”
The exhibition of contemporary art in Samara brings together works by artists of different generations and creative styles, including painting, photography, sculpture, installations and documentation of performances from the 2010s to the present day. Among the participants are both new young names and authors who have long been known in Moscow. All of them are united by the motif of the journey and meeting, which is important for the city on the Volga, where the real and the dreamlike are intertwined.
Reality and dreams, natural and civilizational, observation and participation - all this is reflected in Samara art.
The journey from Samara to Moscow becomes a metaphor for a long process of change, unfolding gradually, step by step. The exhibition conveys the atmosphere of wandering, where meeting a new reality sharpens perception, but at the same time lulls you to sleep. Travelers, inspired by the trip, reflect their states in their works, showing how the vehicle turns into a cradle, and the landscapes outside the window into vague dream images. A change of environment, be it an overnight train journey or a long car trip, is always associated with drowsiness and fatigue.
Artists explore the phenomenon when visual images and surrounding objects lose clarity and become part of hyperreality, mixing with illusions, and personal experiences are intertwined with global processes.
The exhibition also explores Timothy Morton’s concept of hyperobjects, applying it to everyday situations. Social and political realities, devoid of moderation, pose a challenge to us - to realize our place in this world.
