May 1 in the St. Petersburg art center "Borey" will open an exhibition of Perm artist Ivan Lukin "Udelya". The organizer is the PERMM Museum of Modern Art, curated by artist Peter Bely.
The creative life of Ivan Lukin began even before the Perm Cultural Revolution, which started in 2008 with the Russian Poor exhibition, from which the PERMM Museum of Modern Art was born a year later. However, the artist’s activity and commitment at the exhibition sites of Perm and Russia began precisely with the advent of the museum. Ivan Lukin is the only one in the Perm art community who works in the rare and laborious direction of photorealism. Without resorting to criticism of society, it displays the moments of everyday city life.
The PERMM Museum funds contain five paintings by the author: Sibirskaya 6, Krokhalevka, and the triptych “Moving in Space and Time along Jewelry Salons”. The artist’s works are also kept in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art ERARTA (St. Petersburg) and in private collections.
Anna Suvorova, Deputy Head of the PERMM Research Department: “Visionary and strange vision also distinguishes the creative history of Ivan Lukin, who endlessly redraws fragments of reality that has been observed for years from the window of his apartment and on the streets of the city center. The heroes of the canvases and drawings by Ivan Lukin are the gopniks and bored townspeople - unchanged for the provincial landscape and in the impassive statement of their image like billboards, garages or gray “panels” of urban outskirts. ”
Pyotr Bely, artist, curator of the exhibition “Udel”: “We especially need to highlight the optical devices that Ivan Lukin creates for observation. They break the world into cells, enabling accurate reproduction. The artist’s tradition of knowing the world usually bears the humanistic pathos of the Renaissance. Here, transferred to the environment of total urbanism, it seems to exacerbate the difference between the beholder and the event, bringing to the point of absurdity the accuracy of reproduction. This position of the artist outside of society is quite organically integrated into the policy of the Borey gallery - a structure uniting others looking to the side.
