From April 23 to May 20, the Museum of Moscow will host the exhibition “The History of Intourist in the Soviet tourist poster. From private collections. ” The opening of the exhibition is dedicated to the Days of Historical and Cultural Heritage.
The exhibition "History of Intourist in the Soviet tourist poster. From private collections ”is a retrospective of the originals of Intourist’s foreign advertising posters created in the 30-70s of the XX century. The exhibition includes items from the collections of the Museum of Moscow and more than 30 posters from the archive of the tour operator and foreign private collections.
The company’s artistic heritage is posters, brochures, brochures, leaflets and badges made in the USSR, but painted for a foreign audience. Unknown at home, abroad, they were widespread advertising of an unusual tour destination and eventually became collectibles. On Intourist posters, viewers will see the past of our country through the eyes of foreigners vacationing in the USSR: Crimea, Krasnodar Territory, the Caucasus, the cities of the Golden Ring, Leningrad and Moscow. Posters create the perfect commercialized image of Soviet recreation. They are made in the art deco style popular in the West and resemble the works of the Russian avant-garde, widely known in America and Europe.
Director of the Moscow Museum Alina Saprykina: “Especially for the exposition, the Moscow Museum provided Soviet resort photographs and things of travelers from 1960-1980: casual and leisure clothes, a collection of suitcases and vehicles - bicycles and cars. Visitors will compare two images - the western image of “Soviet chic” and the one that developed among our compatriots - photographers, reporters and Muscovite tourists. By the way, admission to the exhibition will be free throughout its work. ”
Director General of the tour operator Intourist Viktor Topolkaraev: “The exhibition is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the founding of the organization and talks about the image of our country in all its diversity formed for a foreign audience. I’m sure that many will be interested to see Intourist’s foreign posters made in a style uncharacteristic of those years and completely unknown at home.
