December 26 at 16.00 in the Information, educational and exhibition center of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (Lenin St., 103, 2nd floor) will open the exhibition "The Art of Rest".
The exposition was based on the work of famous artists, graphic artists, sculptors from the collection of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts. Many of them are exhibited for the first time.
The exhibition immerses the spectator in the ordinary life of people of different classes for four centuries. The presented works demonstrate the habits of people who lived in different eras, their way of life and leisure, lifestyle.
A significant part of the exposition consists of plots from everyday life. Dutch artists are considered to be masters of the domestic genre. A typical motive of Dutch painting is winter fun. In Russia, sleigh rides were the most favorite winter activities. Genre paintings appeared here later, in the 19th century.
An integral part of everyday leisure was music. In the paintings of Dutch masters, people playing and singing from different classes, vagrant musicians, an audience listening to a game or singing are widely represented. Engraving by the German master Johann Wille “Wandering Musicians” is distinguished by the cleanliness and softness of the touch, skillfully conveying the nuances of chiaroscuro and the texture of objects.
Engravings by French masters from the works of famous painters enjoyed great success: “The View of Lokeria” by Jacques Philippe Loeb (1707 - 1783), “Recollection of Past Years” by Pierre Francois Bazan (1723 - 1797), “Soldier’s Fun” by Sebastian Bourdon, “Flemish Spinner "Louis Syuryuga and others.
In England, starting from the 17th century, a gentleman’s club was an indispensable attribute of life. The clubs made useful contacts and maintained professional contacts. Some went to the club in order to read books, others in order to have fun, eat and drink at discounted club prices. The engraving by William Dickinson “The Country Club” is based on a caricature of the famous English artist Henry Banbury, who became famous for his humorous paintings.
A special section of the exhibition are works devoted to the holidays. A holiday is a transition from everyday life to some other reality, another “environment”. According to Plato, "The gods, out of compassion for the human race, born for the labors, established, in return for respite from these labors… festivities, granted the muses, Apollo, their leader and Dionysus, as participants in these festivals." The holiday is one of the most popular topics in the visual arts for many centuries. This is the “Third Flemish holiday” by Jacques Loeb and the “Demonstration” by Marina Allendorf, the “City Fair” by Nicholas de Bruyne and the “Holiday in Mtskheta” by Grigory Gagarin, the “Shrovetide” by Alexei Bazanov and the “Big Balloon” by Elena Gorina.
The exhibition runs until February 16, 2020.
The museum is open from 10.00 to 18.00, on Saturday from 11.00 to 19.00.
Monday is the day off. The last Friday of the month is a sanitary day.
