From October 8 to October 17, 2018, an exhibition of works by students of the icon painting school Sofia will be held in Moscow. This event is part of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the opening of the school.

In 2008, Anna Andreyevna Golubkova, an active member of the Creative Union of Artists and a regular participant in exhibitions, founded the SOFIA icon-painting school. The name was not chosen by chance. Sofia is the wisdom of God, and the idea was the desire to help people through wisdom to study wisdom, to transfer knowledge about the technology of ancient Russian icon painting.

This exhibition is a kind of report on the work done. During the existence of the SOFIA icon-painting school, students wrote more than a thousand icons! And each icon painted with a student is a separately traveled path - a path of creativity and empathy of the image of the master and students. The basis for teaching the icon-painting school "Sofia" is an individual approach to the student. A person without an art education or a master - a special approach and technique is developed for everyone.

The exhibition presents the work of students written in different periods of time, in different styles, with different levels - for some this is the first icon in life. The works of school teachers and artistic director Anna Golubkova are also presented here.

“The Decade is a very important event for us,” says Anna, “because it means that we are growing up and moving to a new stage. Over the past ten years we have gone through many tests and gained a lot of knowledge. But we are ready to go further and open new roads. In Orthodoxy, for the first ten years, a person is considered a neophyte. And so it can be said about our school that we have passed the neophyte stage. We are a young school, but we believe that we still have ahead. "

The exhibition can be safely called international, as the works of students from other countries - Finland, Poland and South Korea are presented here. Over these 10 years, students from virtually all corners of the world — England, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, China, Korea, Japan, Argentina, and Lebanon — have passed at the SOFIA Icon Painting School. Some of them became masters of icon painting and opened their workshops and schools. And do not count students from all over our country - from St. Petersburg to Krasnoyarsk. Many have already grown into icon-painters, someone has joined the Creative Union of Artists of Russia in the Iconography section. And if initially Anna Andreevna taught icon painting alone, now a team of craftsmen, like-minded people and close friends has formed from former students.

An icon is not just an image, it is a person’s understanding of the Christian religion itself, its unity with God through art. And the icon painting school “Sofia” also sets itself the task of helping students to understand God, to find Him through the images of saints. Icon painting training is based on ancient patterns, however, there is always a creative understanding of the image and the creation of a list (play) of the icon, not only exact copying. The exhibition presents both copies of classic icons and new works.

Masters of the icon-painting school work in the glory of God and a lot of icons painted by students were donated to temples and now serve people.

Anna Andreevna Golubkova has been conducting her pedagogical activity in icon painting since 2006 and before setting up her own school, she worked in various workshops to gain knowledge and experience.
