“Only that love is love,
Who eschews the calculation… "
(W. Shakespeare "King Lear")
Turgenev created his Steppe King Lear on the basis of Shakespeare’s play King Lear. He really liked the play, and he translated it into Russian. I liked how deeply and faithfully his characters were snatched from the very bowels of the human essence, how relevant, faithful, life-like, how especially strong they were in their truth. Shakespeare raises universal problems, gives a historical era, a family conflict, a love conflict, a struggle for the honor and dignity of the individual. Turgenev gives birth to the idea of transferring the “Shakespearean glow of feelings and passions” to our Russian soil, specifically to the Russian village, where also “a lot of raging elemental forces and human passions”, which he himself saw. His hero, Martyn Kharlov, this “Central Russian Lear”, a lumpy person, direct and decisive, not afraid of anyone or anything, not asking for money, not asking for anyone, like a Shakespearean hero, suddenly decides to retire and share the estate and that’s all property between daughters…
What did this step lead to, what consequences did it entail, and why do such good intentions and situations arising from them, in which both Lear and Kharlov find themselves, not remain only in literature or in the memory of past centuries? You can probably find answers to these questions in our performance.
