November 17 in the fermentation shop of the WINZAVOD Center for Contemporary Art a group exhibition "Cartoonists for Human Rights" will open. The exhibition was prepared by the Cartooning for Peace association, which was founded in 2006 on the initiative of the cartoonist Jean Plantu and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, with the support of the European Union.
Twenty-eight European artists will present their point of view on contemporary challenges and world problems in the field of human rights protection. Among the participants are the best cartoonists and illustrators of the world, whose drawings are published in such publications as “Le Monde”, “The Guardian”, “Wall Street Journal”, “The New York Times”.
Our era is the scene of serious challenges. The crises that various countries are facing everywhere testify to a strong global relationship and the need for joint problem solving. How to find a common language and achieve this goal when there are so many contradictions in the world?
The development of the caricature is closely linked with literary journalism. Initially, articles appeared in newspapers with satirical drawings on various events with explanatory text. Over time, drawings began to be published without a description, the plot was understood without words, and although caricature has existed since ancient times, it was not immediately established as art. Today we know many artists whose names became known precisely thanks to this genre.
Caricature is one of the oldest types of drawing. By exaggerating and focusing attention on unpleasant, and often shocking things, the caricature exposes the problems of society in an acute form, without leaving the audience indifferent and encouraging discussion.
The works of cartoonists presented at the exhibition draw the attention of the viewer to the need to respect, protect and clarify human rights, which is a condition of universal peace and freedom.
The exhibition was organized with the support of the French Institute in Russia, with which the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art has long-standing partnerships: within the framework of this collaboration, the Start project artists (the platform for supporting young art at the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art) have been able to go to one of the best french residences in Paris. The exhibition “Karika-tourists for human rights” is an important stage of this cooperation.
The French Institute in Russia was established on January 1, 2012, in order to unite in one structure cooperation activities between Russia and France in the field of culture and education. The French Institute in Russia directly relates to the Embassy of France.
The WINZAVOD Center for Contemporary Art - one of the first Contemporary Art Centers in Russia - opened in 2007 in the shops of the former Moscow Bavaria factory. Winery connects all areas of modern culture: exhibitions, festivals, lecture programs, film screenings, concerts, theater premieres. It contains the main galleries of modern art, workshops of artists, designers and photographers, art cafes, fashion showrooms, a bookstore, a children’s studio and much more. Winery supports initiatives in the field of contemporary art.
The Cartooning for Peace Association was founded in 2006 at the United Nations headquarters. The head of the Association is the artist of the newspaper "Mond" Plantu. Today, ten years after its creation, the Association unites 147 cartoonists from 55 countries. Artists set as their goal the achievement of mutual understanding and respect between people of different cultures and beliefs, speaking at the same time in a graphic language that is understandable to everyone.
