Erarta Museum of Modern Art opens an exhibition of contemporary art of Kazakhstan. Five places belonging to two generations of Kazakhstani artists will reflect on what place Kazakhstan occupies in the modern world in the halls of the museum.
Kuanysh Bazargaliev. From the series When all the people were Kazakh.
The older generation will speak with the viewer in the language of a total installation transforming space. The backbone of the exposition will be the work of famous Kazakh artists - Saule Suleimenova and Kuanysh Bazargaliev. Saule Suleimenova will present in Erart her work from the project “Somewhere in the Great Steppe”, which raises the problem of clogging endless Kazakh expanses with plastic. Kuanysh Bazargaliev will demonstrate his iconic painting with “Kazakh” flags and “koshkarmyyizny” symbols. Thus, through the introduction of a national ornament in world symbols, the artist shows Kazakhstan in a global context.

The new generation of Kazakhstani artists, which will be presented at the Erarta Museum, is trying to realize its national identity in art and is actively using new media in its work. Arman Sain, following Bazargaliev, with the help of a stencil develops the Kazakh ornament through the image of the “alien” - the Hollywood symbol of awesome power. Anvar Musrepov presents a hologram that turns traditional dzhigitovka into an ephemeral digitized image. Swinbike Suleimenova, in her video installation on the examples of six different people, shows how the personal space of an ordinary Kazakhstani has changed over the 25 years of independence of the republic. Her work “25 Years of Independence” participated in the “Protagonists” project at the Venice Biennale.
The artists participating in the Erarta Museum project are among the most promising representatives of contemporary Kazakhstan art. These young authors have already successfully demonstrated their work at prestigious international exhibitions and festivals in Kazakhstan, Russia, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Erarta Museum of Modern Art thanks for the support in organizing the exhibition, the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy. The implementation of this project was also made possible thanks to the “Rukhani Zhagyru” program (“Spiritual Renewal”, section “Modern Kazakh Culture in the Global World”) initiated by the head of Kazakhstan.
The exhibition “Somewhere in the Great Steppe” will be held on the fifth floor of the Exhibition wing of the Erarta Museum from November 25, 2017 to February 4, 2018.
