So is the boundary between the concepts «who» and «what» unconditional? Photographer Victoria Ivanova, at her exhibition «Naturnysli», which opens on January 20 at the Moscow Sports Art Club «Gallery» (Pechatniki), will present the best works of recent years, combined with an attempt to get away from dogmatic, basic definitions of what is alive and originally deprived of life, animate and not... At the exhibition you can see more than thirty black-and-white and color photographs taken in the genre, which the author himself calls «still», contrasting this term with the traditional still-life.
Viktoria Ivanova’s photoantropocentrism is so strong that any nail or clothespin becomes an emotional mirror of the author, his silent language in an attempt to dialogue with the viewer. In contrast to the usual photo-natrium, all the characters of Ivanovo are active. Ivanovoi’s photo-life is no longer a still-life, as dolls in puppet shows are no longer toys. But unlike parsley and columbine - fruits, vegetables, working tools do not play themselves. Chess, pears, nails become human projections, like African voodoo dolls or Slavic amulets, filling the photographs with more than one-day fiction, but with content that is close to the literary notion of «non-fiction».
Victoria Ivanova talks about her exhibition: «Most of all I like working with inanimate objects. Still life is my favorite, most important genre for me. More precisely, «Natura». This word I call what I do. I like to tell stories with the help of ordinary things - vegetables and fruits, clothespins, nuts and adjustable keys. I like to «revive» all these objects in photographs, to give them the opportunity to live a small life. This genre allows me to translate my fantasies exactly in the form I want. I do not need to go to distant lands for this, to seek landscapes, to meet dawns, to wait for the necessary lighting and weather. On this I will not have enough patience. All you need is a dark room, a light brush and a little inspiration. «
