The works that can be seen at the opening exhibition of Valery Konstantinovich Mikhailov are an amazing example of the talent of a talented person in photographic art.
Valery Mikhailov was born in 1946, the first post-war year. Among his peers, he was distinguished by a passion for drawing, a love of photography and a special, romantic, character warehouse. This determined the choice of profession and milestones in life: Valery Mikhailov became a photographer. During the years of Mikhailov’s professional development, the phenomenon of “social photography” arose in the USSR. Mikhailov, possessing a heightened sense of justice, a special artistic vision, could not stay away. Together with his like-minded young Kazan photographers, he participates in the formation of the Tasma creative association, which had a great influence on the development of this trend in artistic photography. Valery Mikhailov was in the thick of things. In his photographs depicting the life of those years, surrounding people, one can see respect for the person, sometimes a slight humor and an always impeccably built composition.
The new project of V. Mikhailov “Unreal reality” presented in the State Museum of Contemporary Art of the Pushkin Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan combines both the experience of a professional photographer and the new author’s method, which made it possible to realize creative possibilities both in form and composition, and in harmony in the ratio of color shades.
Photos of the project resemble paintings by impressionist artists, but do not duplicate them. Using additional optical properties of glass, Mikhailov achieves amazing effects during the shooting itself, without additional processing on a computer. Houses and landscape details - trees, clouds, hills - take on unrealistic fabulous forms and wake the imagination with various associations. The splash of color combinations resembles brush strokes of an artist or is taken away in the field of watercolor tones. The expression in the image is felt, and through the variability of the image forms, the reality transformed by the artist appears. The reality pictures found by the imagination of the artist-photographer are transformed into artworks of photography.
The implementation of the project by Valery Mikhailov allows us to talk about the emergence of a new artistic direction of photography in Kazan.
