We present to your attention an exhibition of unique photographs of Moscow created by outstanding domestic photographers. They reflect the changes of the city over the past one and a half centuries - from the 1850s to the 60s of the twentieth century.
The basis of the exposition was about 100 photographs depicting through the prism of Moscow streets the significant events of Russian history and how the city is rapidly changing in the twentieth century, regaining the status of the capital.
The exhibition presents one of the first photographs of Moscow - four rare prints from the original daguerreotypes of the pioneer of photography, Frenchman Noël Lerebours. These are panoramas of Moscow, the Kremlin with the Grand Kremlin Palace not yet built, as well as a photograph of the Intercession Cathedral, better known as St. Basil’s Cathedral. The photographs of the famous printing company “Scherer, Nabgolts and Co.” of the late 1860s, as well as the patriarch of Russian architectural photography Ivan Barshchevsky, are shown. Many architectural monuments shot by Barshchevsky are now preserved only in his photographs. A separate exposition is dedicated to the works of an unknown author, depicting the surroundings of the Novodevichy Convent at a time when fields were still plowed around its walls, and livestock grazed on the flood meadows of the Moskva River.
The events of the end of the Russian Empire and the formation of the new Soviet power were vividly reflected in photography. You can see pictures of the dismantling of monuments to emperors Alexander II and Alexander III in 1918. Large-format photographs of public speeches by Vladimir Lenin in Moscow have been preserved.
The 20s and 30s are represented by the works of the legendary photographers of the USSR - Alexander Rodchenko, Nikolai Kuleshov, Vasily Ulitin, Alexander Grinberg. In these crucial years for the country, photographers captured a new large-scale construction (“Construction of the House on the Embankment”, “Culture Park” by A. Rodchenko), public events: “Maneuvers of fire brigades on Red Square”.
The chronological continuation of the exposition was shots of such historical events as the Victory Parade on Red Square in 1945, celebrations of the 30th anniversary of Soviet power in 1947, and Moscow during the days of Stalin’s funeral in March 1953. Moscow has always been actively growing and building, which is reflected in the pictures of Naum Granovsky - Moscow State University, Anatoly Topuz showed us the construction of the metro, VDNH. And also, of course, the capital of the period of the "thaw" and "stagnation", achievements in space exploration, human life. "
The final part of the exposition was photographs of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Soviet power in 1967 and from the launch pad of Baikonur, as a symbol of human conquest of space.
