The project “The Photograph of Being” in the Gallery of Modern Art of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts gave the title to the book of the same name by the Kazan philosopher Vladimir Yurinov, which appeared as a result of cooperation with the photographer Yevgeny Balashov.
The exhibition will feature portraits of artists, photographers, actors, journalists, etc., who began their creative journey at the end of the last century, such as Ilgizar Khasanov, Victor Timofeev, Gennady Arkhireyev, Alexander Artamonov, Farit Gubaev, Evgeny Kanaev, Ramil Gali, Olga Yukhnovskaya and others. In addition, self-portraits of Yevgeny Balashov and genre photographs will be exhibited. Most of the works are textbook, representing a vivid, memorable image of the artistic bohemia of Kazan. At the exhibition you can see not only photographs, but also video performances, and painting of the 90s, as well as an archive of the artistic life of those years.
The first exhibition of E. Balashov, a graduate of the Kazan Medical Institute, took place in 1989. Since the late 1990s and 2000s. He was the curator and coordinator of postmodernist conceptual exhibitions that unite various types of art (photography, painting, sculpture, film and philosophical “ideological” subtext). Since 1997, the creative collaboration with the philosopher V. Yurinov began, together with which, since 1997, a project called “The Photograph of Being” was being developed. The general idea of the project: comprehension through a graphic series of fundamental shifts of human existence at the turn of the XX – XXI centuries. The artistic method is staged photography, photographic work - “portrait-face” (person, subject). The pathos of the work is the revival of the classical traditions of the domestic black and white photography and the controversy with VisAgr (visual aggression in modern Western photo-culture). From the model E. Balashov "sculpted" the desired image. And a lot of things here depended on the model, how malleable it was to the desire of the photographer to change her own image, it was no wonder that people who were well-known, most often belonged to creative professions, were artistically gifted in nature, and were close in spirit.
The project "Photograph of Being" is a kind of archiving of the art scene of the 1990s. Yevgeny Balashov became the artistic archivist of the creative environment of the last decade of the twentieth century in Kazan, as well as the “last of the magikans” of analog photography. Now, when almost thirty years separates us from that time, we can look with a gaze of a detached onlooker on the peculiarities of the development of the art of our city. Recall exhibitions, museums and galleries, film, photography, theater, newspapers and magazines. Where is all now? The works of Yevgeny Balashov “enliven” many fragments of the past life already now. Today we have not written an alternative history of Kazan culture, which would be included in textbooks and books. Our exhibition will allow starting the compilation of an art archive and its development for new generations of viewers, to make a museum of what was to be a part of history, remember everything and save photographs, paintings, videos and archival documents.
