London - The Art Russe Foundation and Lord Montague of Beaulieu have signed an agreement to create a permanent gallery of Russian art at the Beaulieu Museum Complex, one of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions. This gallery is just one example of Foundation projects aimed at popularizing Russian and Soviet art.
About 25 works from the collection of the Fund will be exhibited in the main Beauly Castle (Palace House), which has been the residence of the Montague family since 1538, and in the 13th century serving as the main gate tower (Great Gatehouse) of Beauly Abbey. Thematic exhibitions in the new permanent gallery of Russian art will be updated quarterly.
The works of Russian art selected for exhibit at Beauly are part of the art fund of the Art Russe Foundation, led by entrepreneur and philanthropist Andrei Filatov. The activities of the Foundation, established in 2012, are aimed at popularizing Russian art of the twentieth century and raising awareness of the international audience about this significant stage in the history of Russian art.
The works that best reflect the main stages of the development of the Russian art school from the late 19th century to the 90s of the 20th century will be presented at Bulya. Among the exhibited works are the works of Konstantin Maksimov (Graduate, 1960), May Danzig (“He Remembers the Saved World”, 1951), Alexander Laktionov (“Letter from the Front”, 1951), Fedor Reshetnikov (“Again Two”, 1948 -49), Nicholas Roerich (“And we will not be afraid”, 1922), Arkady Plastov (“Lesson in botany”, 1938), Geliya Korzheva (diptych “Deserter and Laundress”, 1985 – 1990, “Hammer and Sickle”, 2003), Igor Obrosov (“Meeting and seeing off the echelons” 1980), Viktor Ivanov (“Smoke break”, 1994) and others.
A selection of masterpieces of Russian art, including works by Nikolai Feshin and Nikolai Roerich, will be exhibited at the Banquetting House at the Whitehall Palace, and then at the Tower of London as part of a closed exhibition in June-July. The closed exhibition organized by the Art Russe Foundation will present to visitors the leading exhibits from the collection of the Foundation. The Art Russe collection includes more than 200 paintings and sculptures of the most significant artists of Russia.
The success of international exhibition and publishing projects implemented by the Art Russe Foundation has shown great public interest in the art of Russia and the USSR. The exhibition in the London Saatchi Gallery, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory, was visited by more than 30 thousand people; due to public interest, the work of the exhibition “Collection of Russian and Soviet Art of the Twentieth Century Art Russe: War and Peace” in Abu Dhabi, which became the first major exposition of Russian art in the Middle East, was extended for two months. Some works from the Fund’s collection took part in various exhibition projects and today are presented in world museums, in particular, the painting by the artist Yevsey Moiseenko “Freedom!” Has been donated for long-term exhibit at the National Holocaust and Heroism Yad Vashem Memorial in Israel.
The decision of the Buly Museum Complex to create a Russian gallery reflects the growing interest in Russian cultural heritage as an important component of world art history. Today, permanent exhibitions of Russian art are already operating in Spain and the Netherlands. In June 2009, a branch of the State Hermitage was opened in Amsterdam (Netherlands), and in March 2015, a branch of the State Russian Museum was opened in the Spanish city of Malaga. In February 2013, an agreement was signed providing for the creation of an exposition of Russian art in the Louvre Museum.
Welcoming the collection of Russian art, Lord Montague noted: “In the past, many noble houses, including my ancestors, collected works of art from around the world, and for my part, I consider it quite natural to place this collection in Beauly in continuation of this tradition. Having personally familiarized myself with some of the exhibited works, I have no doubt that they will make the Bulyi museum complex even more interesting and our visitors will really like it. ”
Andrey Filatov, founder of the Art Russe Foundation: “The signing of an agreement to create an exposition of Russian art in England is an important milestone in the activities of the Fund. Since the foundation of Art Russe, all our work, from publishing books to exhibitions, has been aimed at acquainting the international public with Russian art, breaking through the Iron Curtain, which separated the Russian art school from the world cultural context. The creation of a Russian gallery in the UK for all of us is a recognition of the importance of Russian art as part of the global cultural process. I am glad and proud that the works from the collection of the fund will now be available to the widest public and that residents of England and guests from various countries will be able to discover Russian art, and through it - contemporary Russia. ”
