Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow presents Lobster Land, the first museum exhibition of Philip Colbert in Russia. The curator of the project is Svetlana Marich, deputy head of the Phillips auction house. The exhibition will feature 29 works, including a series of large-scale seven-meter paintings, three two-meter sculptures and a room with an immersive video installation of 270 *, which together convey a new experience of immersion in art.
Philip Colbert was born in Scotland, lives and works in London. The cartoon character-lobster and virtuoso, made in the style of hyper-pop paintings on historical themes aroused universal interest in his work. In his works, he wittily explores models of modern digital culture and its connection with the entire history of art. “I became an artist when I became Lobster,” says Colbert.
The work of Colbert, who received his Master of Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews, has won recognition in museums and galleries around the world for his energetic and refreshing approach to painting and pop theory. Inspired by pop artists of the past, such as Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist, Colbert combines the motifs of ancient painting, the theory of modern art and the everyday images of modern mass culture as if they were seen through the eyes of Lobster - the alter ego of the artist. He is often called "Andy Warhol’s godson."
At the iconic New Paintings and Hunt Paintings exhibitions held in the Saatchi Gallery in 2017 and 2018, Colbert’s transition to grandiose large-scale works on canvas was demonstrated, which marked the beginning of a number of museum exhibitions in different countries.
“I have always been interested in the history of Russian art and read a lot about it in my youth. I was fascinated by Diaghilev’s Russian ballet and studied such stunning artists as Natalya Goncharova. I loved the sketches of costumes by Alexandra Exter, the abstraction of Kazimir Malevich, as well as the works of powerful expressive artist Mikhail Larionov. Their art had a great influence on my artistic thinking.
At the exhibition in Moscow, a selection of my selected works, borrowed from different collections, and a new series of hunting paintings and sculptures by Lobster Land, which I created specifically for this exhibition, are presented. The exhibition project at MAMM contains some references to the history of Russian art that influenced me, as well as works created in the new super-realistic painting aesthetics of Lobster Land. I am pleased to show all these works in Moscow, ”says Philip Colbert about his project.
