Recently, artistic ties between Georgia and Russia have noticeably decreased for obvious reasons. A small exhibition in the Erarta Museum is a window to Georgia, allowing us to feel the current state of the country. This is not a look from the outside: the exposition has no mountain landscapes, no sea, no dances, no temples, no baths, no wine, no tea - there is no booklet, glossy image attractive to tourists. "Phantasmagoria" is a look from the inside. The project tells the viewer about what is happening in Georgia here and now, brings us closer to the state of consciousness of the townspeople living in an era of change. Pictures are like visions, each of which, in fact, could take place in reality.
Many of the works in the exposition are cinematic: they are like spectacular shots by which you recognize a movie or think of it to the end. There is no tear in this tape - there is a continuous stream of life. This is not a drama, but a theater of life, in which everything is mixed: feasts and showdowns of "new Georgians", people in Venetian carnival masks, ballerinas, lovers, houses in the morning fog, shadows of leaves on the sidewalk. The authors convey the reality and unreality of modern Georgia in a special way: it is a kaleidoscope of sensations and metaphors, a carousel of events.
The exhibition presents works by five artists, natives of Tbilisi: Ilya Balavadze, Mikhail Balavadze, Merab Surviladze, as well as representatives of the older generation - Temo Javakhi and Koki Tskhvediani. Each of these authors has his own vision, his own style, his own area of reflection. Complementing each other, they give the viewer the opportunity to immerse themselves in the diversity of contemporary Georgian art.
