On July 2, 2016 at 15 o’clock the grand opening of the exhibition of works by Eduard Steinberg will take place at the Tarusa Art Gallery (a branch of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts).
Eduard Steinberg (1937-2012), an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts, belongs to a small group of artists who, from the late 1950s, began to search for an independent path in art that opposes the ideological and formal language of socialist realism. This group of artists went down in the history of Russian art under the name "nonconformists." Defending their right to free and independent thinking, each of these artists created his own style in art.
The style of Eduard Steinberg developed under the influence of paintings by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, small Dutch. Their picturesque and philosophical depth was revealed to him by his father - the famous artist and poet Arkady Steinberg. Through the Russian symbolism of Borisov-Musatov and Vrubel, E. Steinberg reveals the metaphysical, cosmological space of eternal, unchanging nature, and through the ideas of Kazimir Malevich - his own system of mega-geometry.
The main task in his work, the artist set an attempt to synthesize the best traditions of the Russian Silver Age and the opening of the Russian avant-garde. His spatial constructions, which he called "compositions," are imbued with the light of Christian ideas. In them there always exists a middle cross of the eternal and the temporary, that is, the existence of the artist, his fate and hope for salvation.
Biographically, the life of Eduard Steinberg was connected not only with Moscow, where he was born, but also with the Russian province, in particular with Tarusa, and more precisely - with the Russian nature, which, along with faith and culture, was the main fuel of his work and his life.
Tarusa, where in 1954 after his release from the Gulag was brought by his father, who taught him the basics of moral and artistic understanding of creativity, and Paris, where he was invited to work at the beginning of perestroika by the famous Claude Bernard gallery, were places where he worked alternately. 25 years of his life. He died in Paris, but at his request was buried in Tarusa, which he considered his homeland and the honorary citizen of which he is.
9 paintings and drawings by Eduard Steinberg were donated to the Tarus Art Gallery by the widow of the artist Galina Iosifovna Manevich, 2 more works were acquired by the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts.
An exposition of 11 works by Eduard Steinberg will be open to visitors to the Tarusa Art Gallery until the end of 2016.
