On April 15 at 19:00 in the Small Hall of the Russian State Library for Youth (Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya St., 4, building 1) the opening of the exhibition “Double Continuous” will take place, dedicated to reflections on situations when a person is faced with forced restrictions. The exhibition was created jointly with the Sphere Foundation for the Support of Contemporary Art.
The object of the exhibition will be a series of paintings about heavy trucks on a narrow bypass road.
Sometimes an obstacle arises on a person’s path, which seems to block the opportunity to look at life and the events taking place in it “from the outside.” Restrictions designed to keep us safe leave no room for maneuver. Thus, guests of the “Double Continuous” exhibition will find themselves in a dead end: the bodies of heavy trucks will block the view. All that remains is to indulge in dispassionate contemplation, which is what the exhibition’s author, Violetta Grishina, proposes to do.
“What does a person think about when he finds himself between trucks and trudges along the bypass road for an impossibly long time?” – this situation is taken as the starting point in the exhibited works.
The combination of simple shape, color and heavy truck signs inspired the artist to create a series of works. “Cement truck with a yellow stripe”, “Truck with rust-colored spots”, “Blue truck” are the main characters of two-meter paintings… Paintings that will not allow the viewer to “pick up speed”, because art is usually contemplated motionless.
Also, as part of the exhibition, on May 13 at 19:00 in the Small Hall of the RGBM there will be a lecture where Violetta Grishina and Alexander Zaitsev, together with the guests, will discuss, “So what makes our painting so different, so modern?” Lecturers offer to examine this issue from the point of view of art history, curatorial experience and artistic practice.
Curator: Alexander Zaitsev, artist, teacher. Participated in art residencies in Moscow (Vladimir Smirnov and Konstantin Sorokin Foundation, 2015), Stuttgarter (Stuttgarter kunstverein, 2013), Vladivostok (art residence “Zarya”, 2016). Works and projects were shown at the Samara Art Museum, NCCA, Factory-Kitchen (New Tretyakov Gallery Samara), Winzavod, PERMM, ART4, as well as in the Victoria Galleries, HERE on Taganka, VLADEY.
Violetta Grishina was born in Krivoy Rog (Ukraine), lives and works in the city of Samara. Graduated from Samara Art School No. 1 named after. Singer (1999-2003), School "QUADRO" (2012-2014), Higher School "Learning Environment" Faculty of Contemporary Art (2019-2021) with a degree in artist. Since 2019 he has been participating in contemporary art exhibitions. Works in media such as painting, collage, installation.
In her works, as a rule, Violetta Grishina turns to everyday everyday situations - sunbathers on the Volga beach, the low winter sky of the Samara region, trolleybus passengers… The artist photographs the situations she likes and creates a digital sketch - simplifies it, breaks it down into shapes and colors to make it semi-abstract image without unnecessary details. This image is then reproduced in oil on canvas.
