Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art presents an exhibition of the Chinese-Dutch artist Zhuang Hongyi, who painstakingly assembles his three-dimensional paintings from handcrafted paper flowers.
- Combination of oriental origami technique with European imagery
- Incredible color variations and transitions
- One of the most successful contemporary Chinese artists who represented China at the 55th Venice Biennale
2021 will begin at Erarta Museum with the opening of an exhibition by the Chinese-Dutch artist Zhuang Hongyi. He was born in Sichuan, but has lived in Holland since the 1990s. The author’s works organically combine the material traditional for Chinese art - rice paper - and the recognizable images of the endless Dutch flower fields. Extraordinary three-dimensional paintings are assembled from paper flowers folded by Zhuang using the origami technique and coated with a gradient method with acrylic or oil paint.
These incredibly tactile works combine painting and sculpture. Every detail in them indicates the painstaking work of the creator, and the color variations that the artist manages to convey are amazing. The smooth transitions between shades are fully revealed when the viewer begins to move relative to the paintings in space.
Zhuang Hongyi also creates three-dimensional sculptures and objects, but the exhibition in Erarta is devoted specifically to painting. Impressive Landscapes and Flower Beds will be presented in the exhibition space in such a way as to further emphasize smooth and continuous transitions between shades.
