In 2016, a large-scale, 20-year-long academic project is being implemented - the Fourth Interregional Exhibition-Competition "Red Gate / Against the Current". The ideology, design, technology and spatiotemporal characteristics of this project were predetermined by the work of the great seventeenth-century humanist Jan Amos Comenius “The World of Sensual Things in Pictures”.
The project leader and author is Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Chairman of the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts, President of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia K.V. Khudyakov.

Since 2014, the project has been conceptually reformatted, expanded in terms of geographical representation, number and quality of participants and their works, which provides significant volume and variety of material for the analysis of the artistic process.
In 2016, the competition was attended by representatives from 28 regions of Russia, including from 14 regions of the Volga Federal District, Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as Pskov, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Yekaterinburg, Vladimir, Suzdal, Ivanov, Vladikavkaz, Kaluga, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Crimea.
A strategically important task is the study of the art process and the updating of artistic practices, which are based on the academic foundation and indispensable innovation in the visual arts. The project includes: competitive selection and examination of works, publication of the second volume of the art encyclopedia (publication volume - more than 500 pages with research articles by leading Russian art critics and reproductions of works by contemporary artists and works of N. I. Feshin from the collection of the Pushkin Museum of the RT), traveling exhibition (Saratov-Tolyatti-Ufa-Kazan-Moscow), master classes, round tables, open lectures.
On June 1, 2016, in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, meetings of the expert council and a jury were held with the participation of cultural and art workers from Moscow, Saratov, Kazan, Ufa, and representatives of the Moscow Art and Painting Academy. S. G. Stroganov, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the State Center for Contemporary Art, the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, SGHM im. A.N. Radishchev, BGHM im. MV Nesterov, Creative Union of Russian Artists and the Union of Russian Artists. Initially, more than 700 applications from artists were accepted for consideration by the curatorial group (more than 5,000 works: painting, graphics, sculpture, digital art, photography).
More than 500 works (about 450 authors) were selected by the expert council and the jury for this project. As a result, the finalists and laureates of the competition (31 people) were identified: 6 laureates of the Prize named after K.S. Petrova-Vodkin, 6 laureates of the I.E. Repin Prize, 8 laureates of the N.I. Feshin Prize,
5 laureates of the Prize named after M.V. Nesterov, 6 laureates of the Prize of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Z. K. Tsereteli.
The awards of the “Against the Current” academic competition were initiated by the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts, the Collection of Actual Realism Foundation and the Zurab Tsereteli Foundation in order to support talented authors and perpetuate the memory of enlightening artists who became symbols of the Russian cultural tradition: K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, N.I. Feshina, I.E. Repin, M.V. Nesterova. In 2016, regional executive authorities actively participated in financing the project: the Konstantin Petrov-Vodkin Prizes were funded by the Government of the Saratov Region, the N. I. Feshin Prizes were funded by the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Prizes named after M.V. Nesterova - Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan. All premiums are equal, amount to 50 thousand rubles.
The laureates of these prizes were representatives from different cities and regions: Saratov, Tolyatti, Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Ufa, Ulyanovsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Vladikavkaz, Moscow.
The exposition of the traveling exhibition included the works of artists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Samara, Togliatti, Izhevsk, Perm, Penza, Cheboksary, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Novosibirsk. A total of about 200 works by more than 180 artists. All of them are representatives of various creative unions: the TSH of Russia, the Moscow Union of Artists and the Union of Artists of Russia, interns at the Creative Workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts, free artists.
40 Kazan artists participate in the exhibition project, 4 of them became laureates of the Prize named after N. I. FESHINA (Antonova Irina, Zagidullin Ravil, Lopatin Alexander, Dragunova-Magina Lyubov), 1 winner of the Prize of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli (Munirova Aigul).
The project is being implemented at the expense of the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Creative Union of Russian Artists with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, the Ministry of Culture of the Saratov Region, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bashkortostan, with the assistance of the Collection of Actual Realism Foundation and the Zurab Tsereteli Foundation.
In Kazan, the exhibition runs from October 28 to November 17, 2016.
