The personal exhibition of Arseny Zhilyaev “Return” continues the large-scale anniversary cycle of the Center for Contemporary Art Winery “Farewell to Eternal Youth”. In the new project, the artist rethought the history of culture, looking at it through the eyes of the fictional character of the robot Robert Pasternak. The exhibition opens on December 20.
In the Red Shop, the visitor sees 13 sculptures that the artist created specifically to participate in the jubilee project of the Center for Contemporary Art Winery. All objects are the result of the work of a fictional character, artificial intelligence of Robert Pasternak. Here the spacecraft “resurrected” by the robot, launch vehicles, satellites and other celestial bodies. Thus, Robert conceptualizes his origin. Over time, the sculptures move around the exhibition space, the layout of their arrangement is the result of work not of man, but of artificial intelligence.
An important component of the exhibition is a graphical timeline, a kind of "chronicle" of the authorship of the robot. She talks about the evolution of artistic and technical objects: milestones, lines of influence, development and continuity. Robert, correlating himself with objects of culture, reveals the lines that eventually led to the emergence of artificial intelligence. Understanding its origin leads the robot to yearn for lost human qualities.
This is not the first time that the theme of the art of the future has been raised at the exhibitions of the anniversary cycle “Farewell to Eternal Youth”. Egor Koshelev (Palazzo Koshelev), Urban Fauna Lab (Urban Sauna Laboratory), Misha Most (“Evolution 2.1”), Recycle Group (Template of Life) presented their different visions in their works.
The curator of the “Return” exhibition Andrei Shental: “The central figure of the exhibition is a fictional character engaged in self-reflection, interplanetary techno-artistic mind Robert Pasternak. Peering into human material culture, he, this robot historian, relates himself to the surviving artifacts of past eras, tries to trace his “genealogy” and, like a child, construct his own image. In his memory - traumatic episodes of disasters. Longing for the human, he resurrects, recreates lost spacecraft, brings them back to life. At the same time, we are talking about the eternal return of the aesthetic canon, by which they usually understand the ancient classics. This canon is on display as one of the references. ”
Artist Arseny Zhilyaev: “For me, the“ Return ”project is a big experiment. Not only is this my first exhibition of sculpture, it uses an algorithm as a metaphorological artist and curator. “Return” is not a manifest or a set of ready-made answers. On the contrary. In the process of working on the exhibition, my colleagues and I, who helped with the implementation of the project, had to face a number of insoluble contradictions. But instead of an illusory resolution, we tried to preserve them or even strengthen them. I hope this step made the exhibition more open to dialogue with the audience. ”
