“Alexander Danilov - a talented artist, undeservedly forgotten”
Anna Chudeckaya
The artist Alexander Danilov lived a short but busy life, having managed to create hundreds of paintings, graphic works and etchings, illustrations for magazines in 40 years, work on creating cartoons and decorating dozens of state farms throughout the USSR. He was born in Ukraine, died in Kazakhstan. His life swiftly swept across the country, and Moscow became the main stop on this path.
The exhibition presents diverse works: painting, graphics, etchings and magazine illustrations by the artist.
The suprematist compositions created on the wave of the second Russian avant-garde are of primary interest. The stubborn reluctance of Alexander Danilov to sell his work left a talented master in the shadows. He was recognized only by his friends - Eduard Steinberg, Leonid Talochkin, George Kostaki, Eugene Nutovich.
Graphic works of the artist, similar in spirit to avant-garde works, are dedicated to Moscow, the city in which the artist lived most of his life.
A separate place in the exposition is occupied by the artist’s illustrations to the articles of the magazine “Knowledge is Power”, one of the few publications of the late 60s in which progressive artists could realize their talent.
The multi-layered talent of Danilov will be revealed in the cartoon “RobinGood” (1970), which is shown at the exhibition.
In the year of the 75th anniversary of Alexander Danilov in 2016, the Ekaterina Cultural Foundation donated to the Pompidou Center the composition of Eduard Steinberg’s Memory of Sasha Danilov. Today, most of the artist’s heritage is kept in private collections around the world. The exhibition presents works from the collections of Mikhail Alshibay, Victor Mincin, Galina Manevich and family collections: Irina Smagina, Mikhail Velyaminov and Ivan Danilov. In the days of exhibiting the exhibition, meetings with collectors and art historians are provided. The era and art of the 1960-70s will become closer, clearer and more interesting.
