The exhibition of graphic works by Albrecht Durer from the collection of the Pinakothek Tosio Martinengo in Brescia, one of the most famous art galleries in Europe, will open the project "Treasures of Italian Museums in the Historical Museum", designed for several years.
“The main task of this project is to acquaint the domestic audience with the world artistic heritage, as well as with the diversity of the State Historical Museum’s collection. For the first time within its walls, the Historical Museum will demonstrate the originals of the famous master of the Renaissance, highlighting the most important aspect of the genius’s work - engraving. The presented series will allow us to trace the development and improvement of technical techniques, to show the features of the artistic language of the master. We are glad that in such a difficult time we managed to implement the project and give Russian viewers an opportunity to get acquainted with the unique monuments of world culture, ”notes Alexei Levykin, Director of the Historical Museum.
The collection of printed graphics by Albrecht Durer from Tosio Martinengo’s Pinakothek is one of the best in the world in terms of print quality and preservation.
More than 120 engravings by the master will be brought from Italy, among which the most famous ones will be presented - engravings “Melancholy I”, “Adam and Eve”, “Prodigal Son”, “Apollo and Diana”. The master engravings of A. Dürer, created in the technique of copper engraving, are distinguished by their exceptional artistic perfection. The ability to use the laws of direct perspective in images, the mastery of the rules for constructing proportions and the monumentality of forms are combined in them with the jewelry subtlety of execution, emotionality and special attention to detail inherent in German art of that time.
A separate section of the exhibition will be the Apocalypse series created by the master in 1496-1498. Fifteen leaves illustrate the last book of the New Testament "Apocalypse", or "The Revelation of John the Evangelist." This was the first major work of the young artist. This cycle is distinguished by the accuracy in the transmission of the biblical word and the inexhaustible fantasy of the master himself, inspired by the mystical lines of Revelation. The most famous work from the series is the sheet "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse".
The works of A. Dürer are accompanied by the works of his contemporaries, who copied the great engraver with amazing accuracy, which speaks of the great recognition of the artist’s skill.
For the first time, the exhibition will feature etchings by Albrecht Durer kept in the State Historical Museum’s collection, including such famous prints as "Portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam" and "Saint Jerome in a Cell".
The exposition will be supplemented by items of decorative and applied art created in Germany at the turn of the 15th-16th centuries. from the collection of the Historical Museum.
