The Museum and Exhibition Complex «New Jerusalem» and the Russian Academy of Arts in the jubilee year of the 1000th anniversary of the presence of Russian monasticism on Mount Athos represent a large-scale culturological project «AFON».
With the assistance of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, artistic plein airs were organized by Academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts at Mount Athos. The authors of the project idea are the brothers Ivan and Mikhail Masteropulo, the sons of the honored artist of the monumentalist Nikolai Masteropulo. In the Sacred Cinema, a blessing was received from the proto of the Holy Mountain of the Elder Simeon for a series of creative trips, in which prominent contemporary masters, academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts took part. Later this intention was blessed by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.
During his stay on Athos, artists visited the Athos capital of Karey, monasteries - Dionysiat, Great Lavra, St. Paul, Stavro Nikita, Iversky Monastery, Serbian Hilandar, Vatoped, St. Panteleimon Monastery, St. Gregory, Kutluush, Philotheus; the monasteries - St. Anne, St. John the Baptist, Andreevsky monastery, the New Skete, the cave and the source of St. Athanasius, the cell of the desert father of Joseph and other monastic cells.
Journey through Mount Athos, communication with the Athonite elders and monks, prayer services at worship services, the opportunity to worship the great Orthodox shrines allowed to touch the monastic life, to plunge into its «sounding», atmosphere. The artists showed unique places only available to monks. They were able to see the oldest frescoes and modern paintings.
Under the influence of amazing scenic landscapes, stunning «breathtaking» views, monumental monastic buildings, the participants of the open air created unique cycles of sketches and sketches, panoramic species works, collected huge material for their further work.
Within the framework of the exhibition project «AFON» in the museum «New Jerusalem» viewers will be able to get acquainted with the works of academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts, made in a wide variety of techniques - graphic sheets in mixed technique by VG Kalinin, pastels of VA Bubnov, enamels of Z.K. Tsereteli, frescoes by EN Maksimov, watercolors by VA Kulakov, paintings by NV Medvedev and VN Razgulin. The exposition will also feature sculptural compositions by G. I. Krasnoshlykov and S. A. Antonov.
